How to connect your till to Tillify

If your till system works with Tillify, your customers can pay by scanning a QR code on your till, straight into your business bank account. This guide covers everything you need to do. It takes about 10 minutes.

Before you start

  • Access to your till system's settings.
  • Your online banking login, or your business bank account name and number.
  • A phone with a banking app, for the test payment.

Expected result

Your till shows a QR code at checkout, customers pay on their phones, and the money goes straight to your bank account.

Exact steps

Start in your till system, not in Tillify.

  1. 1

    Start from your till system

In your till system's settings, find the option to connect Tillify (usually under payments or integrations) and choose it. You'll be taken to Tillify. The link works for 60 minutes and only for the first person who opens it, so don't forward it to someone else. Start again from the till if it runs out.
  2. 2

Sign in to Tillify, or create a free account

Use the email address you want to manage your business with. You'll use this account to see payments, change settings and pay your Tillify bill.
  3. 3

    Choose where payments go

Under Where should payments go?, pick one:
    • Connect with Akahu: sign in to your online banking and choose the account. It's ready straight away.
    • Enter manually instead: type the account name and number. We check it before you can be paid, which usually takes about an hour.
Use your business bank account: every payment goes straight into it.
  4. 4

    Name your business and connect

Enter your business name as customers know it (for example, Harbour Street Bakery) and click Create business and connect. If you already own a business on Tillify, you'll see it instead. Check it's the right one and click the Connect button.
  5. 5

    Go back to your till

Tillify sends you back to your till system, which is now connected. There's nothing to copy or paste: your till receives everything it needs automatically.
  6. 6

    Take a small test payment

Ring up a small sale, such as $1, scan the QR code with your own phone and pay it. There is no test mode, but the money goes into your own business account, so the only cost is the small Tillify fee. If your till says payments aren't enabled yet, see troubleshooting.
  7. 7

    Check it in Tillify

Sign in to Tillify and open Transactions to see the payment. Open Integrations to see your till connected and the setup checklist complete.

How a sale works

  1. Ring up the sale on your till as usual.
  2. Your till shows a Tillify QR code with the total.
  3. The customer scans it with their phone camera and chooses how to pay: their bank, or a card if you accept cards.
  4. They approve the payment in their banking app (or enter their card details).
  5. Your till confirms the payment, and the money is on its way to your bank account.

Always ask for the total your till shows with the QR code. If you pass fees on to customers, it already includes them.

Optional settings

Pass fees on to customers

Add the payment fee to the customer's total instead of paying it yourself. Menu path: Dashboard → Profiles → your business → Edit, then turn on Pass Pay by Bank fees to customers (and the card option, if you take cards).

Accept cards

Customers can always pay by bank. To let them pay by card too, connect Stripe. Menu path: Dashboard → Settings → Stripe connection.

Fees and billing

Tillify charges a small fee on each payment. Fees add up over the month and you pay them as one bill under Billing in your dashboard. Keep your bill paid: if fees go unpaid, payments are paused, including on your till.

Troubleshooting

My till says payments aren't enabled yet

Sign in to Tillify and open Integrations: the first step of the checklist says exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. Most often, a bank account you entered by hand is still being checked (usually about an hour). It can also mean no bank account is linked to your business, or that unpaid Tillify fees have paused payments.

Tillify says it can't connect

The link has run out (after 60 minutes) or someone else opened it first. Go back to your till system and start connecting again.

It says only an owner can connect my business

You've been given access to someone else's business, but connecting a till is for owners only. Ask the owner to do this step, or create your own business instead.

It says my business is already connected

That's expected if you're reconnecting, for example after setting your till up again. Continuing replaces the old connection: the till keeps working, using the new one.

A customer paid, but my till didn't update

Check Transactions in Tillify. If the payment is there, it went through and the money is on its way to you; contact your till provider about the till. If it's not there, the customer hasn't finished paying.

I want to disconnect my till

In Tillify, open Integrations, find your till under API credentials and click Revoke. Your till stops taking Tillify payments immediately. To connect again later, start from your till system.
